Press release here:

ASHEVILLE – Bicycling is fun, aids in fitness, and it gives us mobility. It also helps kids develop judgment, self-confidence, and lifelong skills.

But the most import part of having fun while cycling is learning to do it safely.

That’s why the Asheville Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit and Downtown Bike Unit are partnering with the Mission Hospitals Safe Kids WNC program to offer a bicycle rodeo on May 8.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Stephens-Lee Center parking lot, 30 George Washington Carver Ave.

All ages are welcome, but the event is especially aimed at kids ages 4-10. The goal is to teach them and their parents about bicycle safety and the importance of wearing helmets.

Officers will set up a cone course for kids to show off their bike riding skills in a safe environment and goodie bags will be provided. There will be a few bikes on hand, but families are encouraged to bring their own.
