Here’s the question from loyal reader Jake:

I’m not sure if I should be bringing this one to your attention, or to John “The Answer Man” Boyle.  Please advise.  Anyway, the new wayfaring signs have popped up all over the place.  So, when are they going to get rid of the old ones?  The clutter from DOT is unnecessary, but as it turns out, exempt from City regulation [grumble, grumble].  Here’s one example from the Charlotte Street off ramp of I-240 West.  I took this photo today.  The old sign has got to go, right?  Please?

Any assist you can provide in getting this a little attention (and thus, hopefully, remedy) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks – Jake

Jake, that’s an excellent question. Let me see what I can find out.

There seems to be a lot of repetition around town …. maybe the City/County should think about some consolidation and removal just for aesthetic purposes … especially in light of the tourism bump we mostly likely are about to experience thanks to a recent visitor … but doesn’t the UDO cover these types of signs as well?

My other sign comment is (again) the election signs that folks put up on public property (folks running for Judge, etc who should know the laws related to such signs), which is illegal. They expect us to vote for them to uphold the laws?!?

Signs are a life saver for those of us who don’t come to Asheville often enough to get around while trying to figure out which road goes where.

I was just thinking of this the other day at New Stock Rd…why not do it when you put in the new one?
