Here are my suggestions, from my column today. How do you think President Obama should spend his Asheville vacation?

You can’t really go on vacation without some good reading material. You’ll find it at Malaprop’s, our awesome locally owned book shop. Check out local and regional authors. Consider one of the store’s staff picks, which are always right on. Firestorm Café and Books has some interesting titles. And over at the Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar , you’ll find fine wine and rare reads.

I’m sure you and the missus will want to spend some quality time together. Here’s a Friday date night suggestion: hit the drum circle in Pritchard Park for some great people watching, then stroll on over to a farm-to-table restaurant such as Table or The Marketplace for locally grown fare. Then top it off with a visit to the French Broad Chocolate Lounge . The ladies love the liquid truffle.

Saturday would be a perfect night to get a double dose of the Blue Ridge Roller Girls . The flat track roller derby girls kick butt, all in good fun. The first bout’s at 5 p.m. (get there early). You might also consider catching a local musician like Kat Williams, out at the White Horse Black Mountain venue over in Black Mountain, on Saturday. (I know how you and the first lady love jazz and the blues.)

Finally, think about picking up a piece by one of our innovative River Art District artists as a souvenir. You’ll find plenty of paintings, pottery and sculpture worthy of the White House.

Of course, we would be remiss if we did not suggest that the Presidential family come across the river to West Asheville for Saturday to start the a.m. out with breathing the mountain air while running the Vance Rocket Run 5K with the International Children’s Festival afterwards…all for the good of the awesome Vance Elementary. http://www.vancerocketrun.com/home

    and then…

bustin’ the funk out at the All Go West music festival on Haywood Rd. http://allgowest.com/index.php

President Obama sir…The best is in the West.

I love this! Barack & Michelle should also check out Dead Man’s Cell Phone at NC Stage Co… extended through this weekend. More info at http://www.ncstage.org/

I think Obama should take a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway since it is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year. And no drive on the parkway in Asheville is complete without a visit to the Folk Art Center, representing the work of over 300 mountain craftspeople (of course I am biased since I work there).
