Here’s some of what’s going around:
-Mimi Paige Foundation benefit: Loyal reader Ellen tells me that for the month of April, Alan’s Jewelry and Pawn will donate a percentage of gold sales to the Mimi Paige Foundation. “The foundation is excited the money will be used for bullet proof vests for the dogs in the Sheriff’s department, more money to donate for spay/neuter and also to buy more airtime for psa regarding responsible animal ownership,” says Ellen.
-YWCA’s Stand Against Racism: Loyal reader Kathryn says the YWCA’s Stand Against Racism will be held April 30 and May 1 and 2. Dozens of organizations will show their commitment to eliminating racism, and there’s still time to sign up. “Check us out at www.standagainstracism.org and click on ‘participating sites’ and then NC to see all the folks in our town who care about eliminating racism.”
-Skinny Legs and All CD release: Skinny Legs and All will hold a big CD release party at 8 p.m. on April 3 at the Grey Eagle. Tickets are $7. As folks recall, the band’s lead singer, Jesse Barry, made the cut to get to the Hollywood stage of American Idol this year.
-College brewery: I had no idea there was an on-campus brewery at Appalachian State University. How does that work? I don’t know, but I’m going to find out. Meantime, the Ivory Tower Brewery is holding a logo design contest. The prize is $250 and a couple of tickets to the 2010 High Country Beer Fest.
-Auditions set: From Twitter: Montford Park Players Outdoor Season Auditions Saturday, April 10th at Noon 34 Pearson Drive @MontfordPlayers
-Asheville Vaudeville show: Also from Twitter: Next Performance of Asheville Vaudeville: Thurs. April 1 — 7:30 & 10PM BeBe Theatre

Geez. Make me feel old, will ya? ‘Back in the day’ we had to drive to Blowing Rock to buy beer. We’d go to the Library Club on Friday afternoons after class, where they sold nickel drafts. Sure, they were watered down but for a dollar we’d be pretty darned buzzed, then had to drive back to campus. Why are we still alive? Good question! Glad that Boone/ASU finally got realistic in terms of its alcohol sales…I’m sure the students are a lot safer!
The University in Downtown Denver has a Brewery as well. Sign of the times.
Here’s some of what I’ve picked up: Ivory Tower Brewery claims to be the first non-profit, educational brewpub in the country. They opened last fall on the campus of Appalachian State University, and the brewery is run and managed by ASU faculty and students. The program includes beer and brewing course offerings.
More to come in my Beer Goddess column next week.
