The trouble with the ‘code of silence’

This national story about the beating death of a young man in Chicago — a beating caught on video — is startlingly violent and a sad commentary on the so-called code of silence. The problem is that there’s a similar dynamic at work in Asheville, where local police have had a difficult time solving at least a couple of shootings that were witnessed by dozens of people.
