What will be my Legacy? How will I be remembered? A legend in her own time and in her own way, our Beloved Wife, Mother, Sister and friend, Mrs. Mary Haynes Wilson departed this earth plain, Friday, March 27, 2009, at the tender age of 96. Leaving with us her legacy: Her footprints as a guiding light, her heart taps to be of service to others and her ability to stir our souls with her unique and sacred gift of music.

A mountain woman, native to Asheville, Lady Mary walked her talk on a path of righteousness and knowing God in her life. Her heart was open to all she encountered. Mary Wilson an empowered woman also empowered others. Her strength of character, precision, perfection and professionalism highlighted one’s experience of her and of themselves. Mamma you are a Divine Gift to me and to all of us.’

Mrs. Mary Jane Catherine Haynes Wilson is one of three daughters and two brothers of Mr. Tolbert and Janie Haynes. Preceding her in death: Parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tolbert Haynes Sr.; sisters, Mrs. Edna Haynes Jones, Mrs. Evelyn Haynes Perry; and brother, Tolbert Haynes Jr.

Lady Mary leaves to cherish her, her life partner of 74 years, Mr. Levie Wilson; daughter, Beverly A. Wilson (aka) Fatimah’ Shabazz; and brother, Robert Haynes; a host of nieces, nephews, friends and a tremendous, bountiful, beautiful, loving, blessed extended family.

Lady Mary Wilson was an Educator in the academic and music arenas. She was a Graduate of Stephens-Lee High School and Teacher’s Training at Allen High School, both in Asheville.

Her first position as an educator was at Mars Hill Elementary School, Mars Hill, at the same time, she pursued and earned her Masters Degree in Music.

Lady Mary Wilson was the Organist for Hill Street Baptist Church for 60 plus years, while simultaneously playing for innumerable weddings, funeral services, churches, organizations and events throughout WNC. She received numerous Awards, Honors, and is recognized widely for her gifts, her life.
