Rumors swirl about Asheville Citizen-Times job cuts

There’s still apparently no definitive word on how expected job cuts by corporate parent Gannett will play out at the Asheville Citizen-Times, but that hasn’t stopped the rumors from swirling over at Gannett Blog, the hub for any and all news about the restructuring happening inside the nation’s largest newspaper chain.
For example:

I am hearing the same Asheville will cut it’s production and move it to Greenville. That is a shame. Because I have seen both operation’s and Asheville is a much more productive site!

the production facility is closing. 60 jobs. there will still be another 10% reduction at ACT.

The hammer fell tonight, according to a friend of a friend. Here’s what was passed to me in an email:

"Went into work tonight , and EVERYONE is fired at the A.C.T. production facility except for 3 people.

"The entire pressroom: All publications done here are being printed in Greenville.

"The entire mailroom/production staff: Will no longer be inserting papers, mailing papers, anything."

Can’t agree on the production statement having seen it first hand, but it’s a little sad to see the AC-T in this state. I liked the paper better in the early 90s through 2000, but it’s fading fast now. The AC-T is going to be a shell of itself fairly soon. Some entity will need to rise up and fill the void.

I wouldn’t trust that comment. There are two typos in it, so either it comes from someone who knows little about the profession or a person let go for obvious reasons.
