Loyal Ashvegas reader Tammy of the Ken and Tammy show on WOXL reports that her company will launch a new radio station in Asheville at noon on Wednesday. It’s 98.1 FM, The River. It will feature music that Tammy says will appeal to the Grey Eagle and Orange Peel crowd. They’re essentially trying to appeal to your inner hippie: REM, Marley, lots of independent musicians.

The owner of the new station is Saga Communications, the company that owns WOXL (96.5 FM). Tammy says the new station will play 10,000 songs in a row to start.

Mountain Xpress has a story here.

The River? I thought that was affiliated with a mega-church.

I bet those chimps over at Clear Channel Asheville are none to happy with how Saga(Asheville Radio Group) has been growing over the past couple of years and eating away at Clear Channel’s ratings. While I listen to XM Satellite Radio, it’s great to see some new competition on the airwaves of Asheville.
