The big story Sunday night was the same as Saturday – Haywood Regional Medical Center and its problems. WLOSer Kassandra Pride told us again that the hospital stopped getting Medicare reimbursements for patients after issues with “poor nursing and pharmaceutical services,” Pride said.
State officials were on site to do another survey of procedures Sunday night, and there’s an emergency meeting of the hospital’s board Monday. That was about it. The hospital issued a statement saying it was sorry for the inconvenience, but there were “no negative patient outcomes,” and an old lady outside the hospital said she hopes the hospital can get its act together. Meantime, the Haywood County EMS director said he had extra meat trucks ready to transport patients to Mission Hospitals.

A moped hit a car on Tunnel Road about 3 p.m. The moped rider was taken to the hospital… A 40-year-old Canton woman is charged with robbing the Citgo on Tunnel Road… And there was news from Fayetteville and a body found in Guilford County… O, and Ralph Nader announced he’s running for president.
Russ and the choking game
The hilarity of the infotainmentcast came from anchor Russ Bowen, who started choking while he was reading to us. He just kept getting more hoarse, but there was no stopping. At one point, I could barely hear him reading the news, but he finally got to a point where he could kick it over to Karen Wynne in the weather-guesser-center, where she said, “Good idea!” and went on about how WLOSers blew that ice storm forecast last week. (OK, not really, but that would have been good.)
So while Karen is talking, you can hear Russ gagging and choking in the background, trying to get the ol’ vocal chords to work again. Finally, Karen gives it back over and Russ says something about having a frog in his throat.
Then, in a bit of an ironic twist, Russ told us to tune in at 11 for a replay of a story about “the choking game.”

Isn’t the choking game a sexual thing? Ewwww, thanks for the Russ visual, Ash. Scrub my brain with bleach.
That Russ thing was awful. That is yet another reason I could never do broadcast journalism. Too many chances to…choke.
