Here’s the press release:

The NCAE has endorsed Kay Hagan, Eddie Davis, and David Young in their respective bids for Senate, Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Treasurer. The selections are based on votes of the Association’s membership.

“The members have said they want true friends of public education in the U. S. Senate, at the Department of Public Instruction, and in the State Treasurer’s Office,” said NCAE Vice President Sheri Strickland.

Hagan has demonstrated strong leadership on public education issues while serving in the North Carolina Senate. In addition, she is opposed to school voucher proposals, supports reforming the No Child Left Behind Act, and wants to close the achievement gap for minority students.

Davis, a first-time candidate for elected office, has been a teacher-leader for 36 years. He served previously on the State Board of Education and has worked consistently for higher salaries for teachers and improved teaching/learning conditions in the public schools. He is currently president of the NCAE.

David Young, a leader in the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners, has worked closely with NCAE leaders and members in Asheville and Buncombe County to improve local salary supplements for teachers. Based on his demonstrated skills and experience, the Association believes Young will be an effective State Treasurer.

“Our nearly 70,000 members will work hard this election season to help each of these pro-public education candidates get into office,” Strickland said. “NCAE believes that Hagan, Davis and Young all have a deep understanding of and appreciation for children as our most precious resource, and they’ll work to bring the best to students, teachers and our schools.”

NCAE is the state’s largest education association, representing more than 65,000 active, retired and student members.
