Karen Chavez, an editor at the Asheville Citizen-Times, spent the weekend pimping her book, Best Hikes with Dogs: North Carolina, in Raleigh.

The News & Observer blog Get Out! Get Fit! by Joe Miller covered one of her readings:

Karen talked about how she selected her 51 trails (trails with cliffs were out), about the importance of hiking on a leash (“I recommend a short lead”), how dogs like to have chores on the trail. She also had a show-and-tell, bringing Shelby’s backpack, his collapsable nylon drinking bowl (you wouldn’t drink directly from a spring, your dog shouldn’t either), Shelby’s waterproof dog booties (he’s not crazy about them), and his reflective vest (worn during hunting season so his black labedness isn’t mistaken for black bearedness). I mentioned that our publisher, The Mountaineers, originally asked me to submit a proposal for a book about hiking with dogs. Turns out they got a better deal.

Yeah, Shelby is a girl! Girl, girl, girl! She has yellow booties, after all.
Thanks to Joe Miller, though, (my fellow presenter who also wrote a hiking guide) for stalling for me in front of a packed room at Quail Ridge. It took me more than FIVE hours to drive out there from Asheville. By the way, Raleigh driving sucks.
But the people were really nice! One little boy even asked me to sign Joe’s hiking guide!
