Appalachian State University professor Karl Campbell has been pimping is new biography of former North Carolina Sen. Sam Ervin, the legend from Morganton.

In his book, Sen. Sam Ervin, Last of the Founding Fathers, Campbell talks about how Ervin started out defending Jim Crow (Campbell asserts that Ervin wrote the Southern Manifesto), but moved to a more progressive view. When he hit the spotlight with the Nixon hearings, it was his down-home authenticity that rang through.

Sounds like an interesting read.

It’s a small thing, but his name is spelled "Ervin" rather than "Irvin." I’m a Morganton native, so he was big news there when I was growing up! Will have to take a look at the book…thanks for letting me know about it!
