Here’s some of what we’ve seen today:

The Tryon Daily Bulletin’s top stories of 2007.

Here, the Bleacher Report says you can’t forget the ASU defeat of Michigan at the start of the college football season.

The Mountain Times gives you its top stories from their point of view up in the Watauga, Boone, Blowing Rock area.

The Smoky Mountain News in Waynesville says 2007 was “a year for development news.”

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s travel writer has a list of top travel destinations culled from his year of travel, and the Biltmore Estate is named “most awesome museum.”

The Raleigh News & Observer editorializes on the power plant that Duke Energy proposes for Cliffside in Rutherford County:

In the forested mountains of western North Carolina and elsewhere in the Appalachians, miles from any urban area, dense haze tied to pollution still obscures views. The federal government fears that a new power plant being planned by Duke Energy will make matters worse. That should give North Carolina pause.

Duke last spring received permission from the N.C. Utilities Commission to build one new coal-fired power plant at its Cliffside station in Rutherford County (it had asked to build two units). The decision seemed to make sense because while coal, the worst fuel for pollutants, would fire the new plant, the plant also would have the latest anti-pollution technology and would replace four dirtier facilities. And it would help meet a growing demand for power.
