Weavervegas, a town on the cusp

Last week, we drove out to Weavervegas to check out the scene at a candidate’s forum at town hall. We grew up in Weaverville, so it holds a special place in our hearts.

What we found was a town hall packed to the rafters. We counted 150-plus people in the audience. The local cops had to pull out extra chairs, and they pushed the tables for the candidates all the way to the wall.

Speaking of the candidates – there are nine. Nine people running for three seats. We didn’t really stick around to listen to what the candidates are all about. We’ll leave that to the voters in Weavervegas.

The other interesting tidbit we picked up from an organizer of the forum, from the Weaverville Business Association, was that this event was the first candidate forum anyone can remember in recent history. Two years ago somebody tried to organize a candidate forum, but no candidates or voters showed up.

So what’s going on? Growth and development. Just like most places in Western North Carolina. Weavervegas is “on the cusp,” the organizer said. So people are finally sitting up and taking notice.
