From the WLOSers:
Another fish kill
The heat and the drought have taken their toll on local fish hatcheries, according to reporter Jeremy Butterfield. More than 100,000 trout turned up dead at the Armstrong Wildlife Fish Hatchery on Armstrong Creek.
Experts say the cause was low water levels and low levels of dissolved oxygen in the water. The fish experts tried pumping extra O2 into the water, but it didn’t work.
Farmland to be developed
Looks like Tap Root Dairy Farm in Henderson County is selling out to developers, WLOSers said. A Charlotte developer wants to build a “pedestrian friendly” shopping center. What is that, like those discount store centers they have over in Pigeon Forge? The Johnston family has owned the land for years and needs the property to be rezoned.
Speaking of development, how about an indoor ski resort?
Developers over in Haywood County want to build an indoor ski resort in Canton. The property off Asheville Highway had been targeted for a race track, but that plan never left the starting line.
The developers, Westmoreland Resorts, who have a web site – youski365.com or something like that – want to build five indoor slopes and have lifts and everything. Sounds sketchy to us, and Pat Simon didn’t do a good enough job of reporting to help us make a decision.
In other news…
Buncombe County schools fared well in new end-of-grad testings results that were just released. We can’t make sense of any of it. WLOSers said all but five schools met expected goals, and 12 schools exceeded the goals… It’s hot outside… Somebody has a medical dental bus geared up…. And Russ Bowen reported from the Mountain State Fair, telling us that the fair is going green by using a herd of goats to chomp down some overgrown embankments.
