The city of Ashvegas sent out this cool call for artists. Check it:

The Asheville Public Art Board is calling for applications for the inaugural Public Artist of the Year designed to recognize artists or artist teams for contributions to public art in Asheville. The designated artist will create a unique and durable art piece to be located in Pritchard Park.

Located in the heart of downtown Asheville, Pritchard Park is known for its attraction as a gathering place for the diverse people it serves. The artwork will be located at the west end of the park that is high in pedestrian traffic and utilizes the existing outdoor space framed by the park’s architecture.

The Public Art Board is seeking an exciting work that responds to Asheville’s unique sense of neighborhood culture, enhances the concept of Pritchard Park, and stands up to the rigor of the environment and long-term use. The project budget is $10,000 which includes all estimated cost for artist fees, fabrication, insurance, shipping, transportation and documentation of work.

All professional visual artists, 18 and over, who have resided in Western North Carolina for at least one year are invited to submit qualifications. Artists new to the public art process are encouraged to apply. Candidates must have contributed to the visual arts in Asheville and western North Carolina through exhibition or via their own art venue.

So, artists, time to start thinking creatively.

Deadline: Applications are due to the Asheville Parks and Recreation Department by January 15, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. Mail to Asheville Parks and Recreation, PO Box 7148, Asheville, NC 28802; or deliver to City Hall, 4th floor, 70 Court Plaza, Asheville, NC 28801.

For complete application guidelines and criteria, contact Cultural Art Superintendent David Mitchell at 828-259-5815 or [email protected].
