The Woolly Worm Festival up in Banner Elk continued Sunday, but the worm that won Saturday’s races gets to be the one to give us the official winter prediction. As you know, mountain lore has it that winter can be predicted by the bands on the woolly worm’s back.

A worm aptly named “Jerry Garcia” won Saturday’s contest, and Jerry says we’re gonna be in for a tough one, especially at the beginning:

Week 1 – Cold & Snowy
Week 2 – Cold & light snow
Week 3 – Cold & Snowy
Week 4 – Cold & Snowy
Weeks 5-11 – Seasonably cool but no snow
Weeks 12-13 – Cold & light snow

So there you have it. Go to the festival’s homepage here for more information.
