We've been to Brixx to take advantage of the bogo specials, but if you are paying full cost it is absolutely not worth eating there. I don't think they'll do well outside of South Asheville unless on Tunnel Rd or in the mall. However, aside from the Thirsty Monk they really do have a great beer selection, but they also let kids drinking soda out of sippy cups take up their limited bar area so go late.
@diner – That gas station has been closed for years!
One thing they have going for them is the best gluten-free crust in town. Not the best I've ever had, but the best I've come across here. Major selling point for those of us who can't eat wheat.
Well at least there would be some edible on Charlotte Street – but this is NO downtown so I am less likely to be against them since they are a chain. They do some good things down in Biltmore Park. But, Asheville Pizza has vegan cheese as well – and their pizzas are better than Brixx. The only reason I have went to Brixx was because of the coupons.
Seems Mmmmm Pizzzza!!! is a little obsessed with Brixx Pizza…
Good news! I was hoping to see a good business move into the gas/service station that shut down recently. Hope they do well there because it's nice to see businesses move onto the Charlotte St. corridor. I am a loyal Marco's fan and enjoy Barley's too. That won't change but having some other options is always good. Circle in the Square has good pizza but I don't enjoy having to walk past the smoking employees to get in the front door.
Brixx has good pizza and a nice draught selection. But if you want Brixx, go to Biltmore Park. It's extremely important to support your locally owned businesses. Yeah, the mom-and-pop stores that don't have the big advertising budget, who want to provide good food for their neighbors and the community. How much of the money spent at Brixx will stay in the community as opposed to that spent at a locally owned independent? I'm not saying don't go to Brixx, there's a place for everyone out there, but do they need to saturate the area with Brixx?
Finally a chain moving downtown? Sorry, but there have been chains downtown for quite a while:
Mellow Mushroom
Doc Chey's
Marble Slab
Subway
Mast General Store
Greenlife/Whole Foods
Jimmy Johns
Tripps
Many of those chains have been there for years so chains downtown is nothing new.
has anybody been in to Brixx lately? They have the best beer selection in south asheville, hands down. all 24 taps are craft beers and $1.95 for all pints on moday is the best beer special in the state! where else can you get a Bell's, Founder's, Terrapin, Greenman, or Lagunitas pint for that much? throw in the fact that everyday after 10:00pm is boy-one-get-one pizza and apps and Brixx is now my favorite bar in the city. I was there last week and had a kalamazoo stout cask, I must say you now have my attention. good work Brixx on bringing great beer and great food to this guy at a cheap price. Good luck on the next one.
You know Brixx Pizza has monthly coupons for buy one pizza get one free M-Thurs.
Their pizza is delicious. I'm vegan, and I love having someplace other than Mellow Mushroom to go to (not that Mellow is bad, but sometimes different is good). They have vegan cheese, and it doesn't cost extra. They also have cheap draft beer on Mondays and really awesome BOGO coupons if you happen to find one.
Finally a chain restaurant moving into downtown. Maybe outback steakhouse can move into the old s&w place!
FYI its a local restaurant. Brixx is based in charlotte, therefore it falls under the local restaurant category.
Good pizza, great service, excellent draft beer selection. It's filed a nice niche in south Asheville, which has very few of the kinds of local pizza places found elsewhere in Asheville.
@ashevillain: oops. I did not see the last sentence in your post about Chicago style pie. Have you tried Vito's?
There is a Chicago style pie place on Airport Road called Vito's. I had it once about a year ago. It was okay, but the people I was with only got one topping. If you get Chicago style pizza, you gotta get the works. It was also soon after they opened when I went and they couldn't sell beer, which was sort of a bummer, but II will someday give Vito's another shot. It would be nice to have a Chicago style pizza joint a little closer to town, though.
Chicago style is most definitely what we need around here. Maybe the owners of Gino's would be interested in franchising a Gino's South down here, that would be friggin sweet.
Also, a portillo's (sp?) would be awesome here too, but don't think it would be able to sustain itself.
We've got 2 good NY style joints (Circle in the Square and Marco's) and slew of standard type places (APC, Barley's, Mellow Mushroom, etc etc) which are decent but mostly a
IMO what we really need is a good authentic Chicago style place! We need someone who lived and breathed the Windy City to bring their craft to Asheville. (and before someone says it…No. I know there is/was a place in Arden)
Solid pizza…about $9-10 for a good sized individual pizza. The bar selection has improved nicely since they opened, quite a good mix of local and other craft beer.
Not bad pizza, but it's that California kinda pizza. Kinda fancy. And a little pricey for what it is. I'd rather have Barley's or Standard.
Before the haters start dogging this pizza place. Take a minute and read how they got started in Charlotte.
Believe it or not, the plan for Brixx Wood Fired Pizza was hatched on a ski slope! While skiing in Colorado, Operating Partner Eric Horsley had one of those “light bulb” moments. He headed back to Charlotte, NC, and shared his idea with Managing Partners Jeff Van Dyke and Barbara Bodford-Morgan. Together they opened the first Brixx Wood Fired Pizza in 1998 in the historic Dilworth neighborhood.
In developing the Brixx concept, the partners drew from all their combined restaurant experience. They knew they wanted to include all the fun stuff and eliminate the headaches. Everybody loves great pizza with a good beer, so the goal was to keep it simple and fun. That’s why Brixx has such a casual, relaxed feel!
Majority Partner Harding Stowe had only one request – “to have the best pizza in Charlotte.” No problem, Harding. Brixx has been voted Best Pizza by the readers of Creative Loafing,Charlotte Magazine and The Charlotte Observer
Great pizza, and they have vegan "cheese" and will substitute with no extra charge.
