From loyal Ashvegas reader Jan:

But you left one picture out that I’ve just recently noticed here in downtown.   You need a picture of a big ‘ol pile of steaming dog poop.  Because I am frequently dodging these piles in my daily commute along Walnut Street, between the civic center garage and my office on Market Street.
Yesterday there was a HUGE pile in front of Scully’s….HUGE I’m telling you….might have been left by Big Foot.  Today it was quite flattened and probably carted off in pieces embedded in peoples shoes. Ugh.  But I see lots of it along Walnut St.  Seems there is a new pile or piece every 3 or 4 days.   People need to clean up after their dogs in the downtown area becaus this is just nasty.

That’s my rant for today.

Hate to be the one to say this..but some of that probably isn't from dogs. There are a lot of homeless in the area that are not particular where they let loose.

I'm not usually a ranter. But as I was leaving Broadway's after the last downtown-after-five I slipped on a huge pile of dog poo and then landed in it. That pile of poo was NOT left on a vacant street by wild dogs – it ended up there in the middle of the crowd. Please – rant away.

I attribute all the dog poop that is left around to Seniors. They feel they have paid their dues and to hell with everyone else.

People need to clean up after their dogs everywhere, not just downtown. I deal with the same problem at my apt complex every day…also while out hiking, although not as big of a problem there since I'm already on the lookout for other animals mess (bears, horses, etc.).

Well, now, I was once, a long time ago, an Animal Control Officer (AKA Dawg Ketchah), and there were wild dogs all over downtown. I don't know if they were strays from the South Charlotte area, or some other residential area, but they were in the area all night long. Add to this that we now have coyotes (yes, coyotes in downtown Asheville), and you will have multiple sources of pooh not left by irresponsible dog walkers.

It isn't just downtown. We live in WAVL and my 7 year old and I have to dodge piles of poo on our daily walk to school. Who lets their dog poop on the SIDEWALK people???? Come. On.

What is the fine for letting your dog poop on the street or side walk without cleaning it up? If there isn't one there should be.

It wouldnt surprise me if it were maybe only 2 or 3 people making this mess. Dogs poop a lot, and one lazy owner can leave behind 4 piles a day. There are a ton of people in this town who probably feel they are too good to pick up dog shit. Downtown is overflowing with stuck up overprivledged buttholes.

Preach it, Jan! I've noticed quite a bit of dog poo downtown as well. Furthermore, why do people think it's okay to leave dog poo all over city parks? I run at Carrier Park a few days a week, and while I'd prefer to run in the grass along the paved trails, that's simply not possible due to the piles of dog poo from one end of the park to the other.

Folks, a general rule to follow is that if the grass is mowed on a regular basis, pick up the poo when your dog does its business there, as others have a reasonable expectation to be able to walk there. If it's an unmowed area with generally tall grass, it's okay to leave it be, though you'd be super cool if you were to pick it up.

No Doubt! I have a 75 lb dog and almost ALWAYS have a bag — this is necessary! Asheville was just named one of the top 10 pet friendly cities which is an amazing testament to our community — but dog caretakers need to think of everyone else on the streets.

The city has added many additional doggie bag sites, but it is on the owners to clean up after them. PLEASE clean up after your dogs and keep our city clean! (and dont hurt the image of all other dog caretakers….)

    Thanks Jan
