Press release here:

The Asheville (N.C.) Regional Airport Authority (ARAA) this week will unveil its newly reconstructed gate area at the south end of the airport terminal. Formerly known as the A-Gate area, this space – a $10.6 million project – will begin serving passengers Oct. 8, officials said.

The terminal offers a panoramic view of the runway, three new gates and jet bridges, a spacious hold room with natural lighting, and, in March, a new concessions area with a full restaurant and bar.

I just googled my name and saw that someone apparently posted under my name a few years ago. Please let it be known that the above words were not mine. Further, “lol” is a waste of language. Thanks for understanding.

Joseph, the commenter didn’t use an email address, so I couldn’t contact them to verify if there’s another Joseph Barcia running around. So the comment has been deleted. – Jennifer

Thanks so much, Jennifer! There’s the top comment as well that sparked the original debate in which there’s a typo “new feces” that I’d be happy to see deleted as well if that’s possible. 🙂

Since doing that would make the whole thread no longer make sense, I just changed the name of the commenter.

Readers, please note this was done ONLY because I can’t verify that Joseph Barcia is the real name of the original commenter, while a real person with that name doesn’t wish to be associated with these comments.

The comments stand, only the name has been changed.

Thanks so much for your help! I completely understand that and it’s good that the thread still makes sense. 🙂

Airports, all airports, get Federal Grant money from the FAA for terminal imrpovements. Those funds come from the fees airline passengers pay on every ticket purchased. So, before bitching about tax dollars (which seems to be a common complaint from folks who don't know what they're talking about), take the time to find out how things work. By the way…..the Postal Service is also self-sufficient.

Joseph – how many people fly in and out of AVL? How much was taken from tax dollars vs from income that is made by the airport? I'm sure you have all this data available so please link to in a new post.

Also, here's I totally suggest taking a local business class or something that goes through how commerce works and how development fuels business and the environment. As much as I'm not a fan of the tourists here in Asheville – it's important to understand that this town is so cool BECA– — USE of the tourists. If they didn't come here, this town would nothing to what it is today. That airport is a main way of travel – so it's important to the city that it's maintained and kept up with.
Trust me man, you want the airport and other local travel projects to get tax funding. Otherwise, Asheville just wouldn't be… well, Asheville!

Joe is a funny guy. If you compare flight costs for flying out of Asheville, Raleigh, Charlotte and Greenville there really isn't that big a difference. Wouldn't you rather fly local, from Asheville, than having to drive all the way to another airport, probably have to get a hotel room, etc? Why wouldn't you want your local airport to expand and in turn get more flights out of it and more public use? Seems like a WIN for Asheville all around. Good job!

Maybe they should name it the Number 2 Terminal. We should really get to the bottom of this.

Perhaps with new facilities they will be able to lure more airlines which will lead to more competitive fares. We ARE in a tourist based economic area, so it seems doing what it takes to lure more tourists in then the better…and perhaps we will be able to fly out of our own airport rather than drive and put $ in the pockets of our neighboring areas with bigger airports. Feces…good one, dunce

People bitch and moan about things like this, yet the airport (AVL) is doing phenomenally well right now. And it is not as expensive to fly as it once was, often cheaper than GSP and CLT.

Plus, if AVL doesn't spend it, some other airport will.

    Joe,

Do you have proof they are spending tax dollars on feces? And what exactly are they doing with these new feces?

What a huge waste of tax dollars. Tiny little AVL Airport simply does not need any major expansion or remodeling.

They have been using government money (Homeland Security & Stimulus Funds) for years now doing insane things like new feces, new baggage areas, rental car and parking, and now remodeling the gates. Give the taxpayers a break.

This airport simply does not have the passengers to justify these expenses. Besides, it is always so expensive to fly from AVL. What a waste.
