Verve magazine has hit the streets, and offers up an interesting tidbit: well-known Asheville writer and columnist Susan Reinhardt, a long-time columnist for the Asheville Citizen-Times, will be contributing a relationship advice column to the monthly magazine that profiles local women.

From editor Jess McCuan

And, look out VERVE readers – here comes Susan Reinhardt. We couldn’t be more pleased to welcome the humorist and author to our lineup of contributors. She’s a longtime Asheville Citizen-Times columnist and author of, among other funny books, Not Tonight Honey, Wait ‘Til I’m a Size 6. Look for her first relationship advice column in our November issue.

Over the years, Reinhardt has been open, and written numerous newspaper columns, about her relationship issues. Should be interesting.

These are some of the most mean spirited comments I have ever had the great displeasure to read. What does it say about you that you would so gleefully write things you know will be hurtful to another human being? It says everything I need to know to be quite certain that I hope never to make your acquaintance! It also tells me you are not true Southerners and are quite welcome to leave if you haven’t garnered a modicum of compassion for the people whose lives will be impacted by your words. Here, we have the decency to be polite.

You might try it sometime; it works like this: If you have nothing kind to say to someone who has not been unkind to you, you say nothing at all! Essentially, you are speaking directly to her when you make these comments … though behind your veil of cowardice. Are you really so cruel? I hope she never read these comments, but it’s likely she did … which makes me sad. Thank God, I have the ability to empathize with someone who has been hurt by another.

I – as many, many others – have been uplifted by her writing and respect the work she has done. I look for her byline in the ACT and make certain to read her pieces. Maybe you should try it again. Perhaps you’ll discover a new concept … it’s called humanity.

Totally agree with Lena, the columns now are past pathetic. There were a few in the earlier years that were entertaining to some people.

Not sure how she can advise people about relationships given the cell phone tirade she was having with someone that we overheard outside Asheville Community Theater last winter.

Have no idea who at Gannett is running the show with the Asheville Citizen Times. It must be the same person who keeps Sports Editor Bob Berhaus on staff.

Susan Reinhardt has got to be one of the worst writers ever. Her pathetic column has been in the local paper here for years and it is always filled with complete crap. Not even close to funny. She has tried to copy the late Erma Bombeck, but has failed miserably in every endeavor. Only in Asheville, NC would someone of such little talent survive.
