Asheville transformed into ‘City of 1,000 Easels’

This event on Sunday was a smashing success: more than 100 artists, doing their thing on the streets of Asheville. Great idea on the part of the Asheville Area Arts Council and program director Graham Hackett.

Everyone on the streets of Asheville – especially the tourists – loved seeing the artists at work. People were chatting, making new connections. The artists were excited to put down their own brushes and see what everybody else was creating.

This event, in one fell swoop, gives new life to the moribund arts council, an organization that has lost its way in recent years. By injecting new life – and instant street cred (literally) – the Asheville Area Arts Council suddenly becomes relevant again.

And for the city of Asheville, this kind of event is what people mean when they talk about a “world-class arts destination.” Vibrant artists on display in a newly accessible way. Like the Asheville Symphony concert in Pack Square Park last weekend, it takes advantage of our city’s two great strengths – our awesomely creative artists, and our amazing downtown. Other local arts organizations should take note.

Thanks to all the artists who gave a piece of themselves to create their work in this very public way. The photos of the event were exceptional, they captured the beauty of the moment, the artists and the people alive in their city.
