A new restaurant called Star Diner is set to open soon in downtown Marshall. Brian Sonoskus, the former executive chef at Tupelo Honey Cafe, has signed on as chef and it appears that the restaurant stands ready to elevate this little mountain town’s restaurant scene.

The Star Diner is the name that’s stuck with the restaurant’s location on South Main Street, a spot that was once a roadside gas station. Not much has been with the spot since.

Sonoskus is a top talent, having worked with Tupelo Honey since its inception 15 years ago. Specializing in scratch-made specialties, the restaurant developed a culinary identity with its own twist on Southern specialties such as fried chicken. Today, the menu features fancier small plates, as well.

Tupelo Honey Cafe has grown along with its powerhouse popularity. Today, there are Tupelo Honey Cafes in Raleigh and Charlotte, N.C.; Knoxville, Franklin, Chattanooga and Johnson City, Tenn.; Greenville and Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Arlington and Virginia Beach, Va.

 

Marshall’s dining scene is still pretty limited. Coffee shops and bakeries, including Zuma Coffee and Sweet Monkey Bakery & Cafe, filled niches there several years ago. There have been a series of restaurants that opened and closed over the years on Main Street but didn’t stick. Newer eateries such as Good Stuff servesorganic food in a comfy setting. There’s a Mexican restaurant, but not much else. The town (and Madison County’s) first craft brewery, Mad Co Brewing, just opened.
