(Their official Facebook name is Habitat Tavern and Commons.) They’re opening in the former Alan H. Shaw hardware store at 174 Broadway in a building owned by Mike Adams, CEO of Moog Music Inc., which is right next door.habitat_brewing_2_asheville_2015

Matt Addis and Jonathan Myers have know each other for about the past seven years. Addis, who hails from Concord N.C., spent the last five years in Portland, Oregon, before moving to Asheville. He and his wife, who have one young child, wanted to move closer to home, Addis says. (His father is from Rutherfordton.) Myers grew up in Ohio but most recently had been living in Seattle, where he met Addis. Myers says he grew up hiking and camping in Wester North Carolina and was looking for a change when he and Myers decided to team up and open a craft brewery.

Addis, an experienced home-brewery, plans to do most of the brewing starting out. “We’ll be pretty nano, with close to a 2-barrel system. We’ll be sticking to classic ales and seasonals, and we’ll have guest taps for cider,” he says. There are no plans to distribute right out of the gate, and no plans for in-house food. habitat_brewing_1_asheville_2015

Habitat Brewing will encompass 4,400 square feet, a massive space that Myers says will allow the brewery to connect with the community. The space will be designed to essentially allow owners to split it in half, with the brewery on one side and meeting space on the other.

“We’re thinking of this space as a living habitat, and you need certain elements for it to be healthy. We’re hoping to help people connect on different levels,” Myers says. Addis adds that “It’s a space for and by the community, whether it’s a lecture series or a yoga class.”

Look for Habitat Brewing to be open in spring 2016.

  1. Nice to see a brewery coming to that little neglected stretch on Broadway!
