More of what’s going around, including plans for a new bar in downtown Asheville called 27 Club:

-There’s a new bar in the works for downtown Asheville. It’s called 27 Club, and it’s planned for the former Sherwood’s Music spot across from Echo Mountain Studio at 180 Patton Ave. Look for a September or October opening.

-Wilco is playing the Asheville Civic Center on Oct. 9. Tickets here.

-Asheville’s velodrome is getting a makeover.

-This week is a busy one with the Asheville City Council Election ’17 candidate filing deadline on Friday. As of Friday, here’s who had filed to run for City Council: Mayor Esther Manheimer, seeking re-election; City Councilman Cecil Bothwell, seeking re-election; and first-time candidates Jeremy Goldstein, Vijay Kapoor and Pratik Bhakta.

-Implementing North Carolina’s new “brunch bill” is controversial in Black Mountain, where alderman plant to meet Wednesday morning to debate it.

-The Asheville Downtown Commission approved renovations for Tyler building at corner of Walnut, Lexington; no big changes planned there. Here’s more out of that meeting:

-Dana Frankel, Asheville downtown development specialist, says city received 13 proposals for programming at old “pit of despair” in downtown Asheville. Programming should start there in late August.

-Street resurfacing, which last week was happening on North French Broad Avenue in downtown, is scheduled next for Collier, College and North Market Street.

-A group of Asheville city officials are road-tripping to Atlanta on Oct. 13 to talk about public-private partnerships and more. It is billed as a joint meeting of the Asheville Area Riverfront Redevelopment Commission and the Asheville Downtown Commission, but a number of other city officials have been invited to see how Atlanta does business. A total of about 50 or 60 people will be taking the trip.

-Meet Chris Womack, the new WLOS sports reporter replacing the departing Luke Notestine. Womack was born and raised in Nashville, Tenn., and graduated from the University of Alabama. He’s most recently been working for the CBS affiliate in Birmingham, Ala.
