The Kmart store at 1001 Patton Ave. in West Asheville is closing by the end of the year, an announcement that came with corporate owner Sears’ bankruptcy filing on Monday.

Another key tenant of the Kmart shopping center, Sun Soo Martial Arts, has also told its membership that it will be moving at the end of the year. Sun Soo plans to relocated to the River Ridge shopping center in east Asheville.

Sears, a giant of a retailer for decades, has been struggling. Sears closed its nearly 46-year-old store at the Asheville Mall in July. A plan to redevelop the Sears location at the mall into new retail space, a movie theater and add apartment buildings is working its way through the city’s development bureaucracy.

Word on the street is that Publix grocery store is already eyeing the Patton Avenue spot as a new location for one of its grocery stores. Rumors have also swirled for years regarding the redevelopment of the former tire center that sits on the edge of the Kmart parking lot closest to Patton Avenue. The talk was that the site might be remade into a restaurant, such as a Golden Corral.

We’ll see what happens.

I bought the old K Mart location and am turning it into a Stripclub/Casino. Don’t worry, there will be a confession booth right outside the exit so people can ask for forgiveness when they leave. It’s a win-win. Your love life will enhance and there will be no fear of going to hell for committing a sin. We’ll have Fox News running all day and you’re free to open carry and smoke cigarettes. It’s Basically a paradise for conservatives. BYOBible.

A good steak house would be nice…both Patton and Haywood Ingles need to be replaced. No room for growth from either building.
No Publix needs to go there-while their deli foods are good and much better than Ingles, they are much higher in price as well.
Maybe do something for the kids in the neighborhood? Right now there is nothing on that side of town for the kids but the Putt-Putt…Weaverville had Play Station and there is the Trapoline Park out off Long Shoals…or even movie theatre would be great!

Publix’s prices are in line with Ingle’s. If you want higher prices, go to BI-LO and Food Lion if they have stores remaining.

Publix would be great. Maybe it would give Ingles some competition for it’s West Asheville store on Heywood to finally update it from 1982. For the love of all things Holy, please, please please no Golden Corral!

Ingles#5 will relocate to a replacement store at Brevard Road and South Bear Creek Road south of Interstate 240 in the future.

I would like to see Golden Corral locate on Patton Avenue. Many popular restaurants along the corridor have closed and have been demolished in recent years.

I do not know how active Publix Super Markets has been or is seeking sites in Asheville and Buncombe County for additional store locations. Publix Super Markets will need to do more than two stores in Asheville and Weaverville to compete against Ingle’s Markets.

Could Ingle’s Markets acquire Kmart #4112? If it did, Ingle’s #2 could relocate from the corner of New Leicester Highway and Patton Avenue to a replacement store in a new location. Sav-Mor #18 on Patton Avenue could relocate to the existing Ingle’s #2. Ingle’s #5 on Haywood Road could relocate to a replacement store in a new location at Brevard Road and South Bear Creek Road south of Interstate 240.
