   police were standing around the topless festival when they were supposed to be protecting citizens.Its not like anyone was getting an eye poked out or anything.

   I’m 64 years old, a Christian, and this story is total horse manure! I’ve attended Bele Chere in Asheville every summer and love it. However, those supposedly Christians “screeching” nothing but hell and damnation through magaphones are way out of line. THEIR behavior — negative, screaming, demanding, divisive, hate-filled, and plain ‘ol WRONG — create the problems, not Bele Chere’s “legitimate” vendors or the festival-goers. They are the ones disgracing the festival!

   I am 61 years old: I was at Bele Chere and the vile, ugly, filled-with-rabid-hate acts and words were being perpetrated by the so-called christians. It gave me a pain in my chest and was horrific. These people think they are following Jesus?????????

   When you go to a peaceful festival and assault the people there with nasty threats on a megaphone, you really ought to expect a little backlash. When you tell lies about what goes on at the festival, then come back each year to rant on your megaphones again, you should expect some people to speak up. The headline here is completely backwards. It’s the evangelists and their loud, vile nonsense who must be endured by everyone at the fair.

   I tried to leave this comment at the Christian News article, but it wouldn’t publish for whatever reason:

   My name is Gordon Smith, and I’m a City Council member in the great city of Asheville. I overheard a Pinpoint Evangelism operative talking on the phone to someone. He described the scene incorrectly and demanded that State Troopers come to address the nonexistent claims he was making. I approached his colleague and offered to help. As they were casting aspersions on our police officers, I thought it important to address those issues within my official role. The operative refused to speak to me, refused my help, and shouted, “Get out of my face”, before throwing up his hand and walking off.

   The whole scene appears to be a way to create negative publicity, engender ill will, and provoke peaceful festival goers.

   Thanks for the opportunity to record my observations here.

   I must have been at a different festival.

   “Boyd and others at the festival told Christian News Network that women would flash the preachers by lifting up their shirts, men would walk around in their underwear or completely naked, public sex acts would take place on the streets and other lewd acts were performed in front of women and children. Some of the preachers were reportedly assaulted or threatened with violence. However, they state that police did nothing to stop it.”

   Isn’t lying a sin?

    The bad behavior of a few people reacting to the evangelists can not be condoned but evangelists (of any faith) at an event such as Bele Chere have less relevance than the $6 corn dog vendor. Perhaps Asheville proves there is a bastion of skepticism, logic and critical thinking in the South.
