More of what’s going around:

-Winter conditions that developed quickly on the afternoon of New Year’s Eve created icy road conditions across Asheville that snarled traffic, forced the cancelation of some New Year’s Eve parties and local venues and kept many people at home. It all started about 3 p.m. when a misty rain and some snow flurries started falling around town. Folks were in full holiday mode, out and about with friends and family, and were caught completely off-guard by the freezing drizzle, or freezing fog. Traffic on all major roadways around town slowed to a crawl, stranding many. There was one social media report of the Hilton hotel at Biltmore Square Mall putting up hundreds of stranded motorists in their ballroom for the night. It was a crazy end to a rollercoaster 2017.

-Habitat Tavern and Commons will be transformed into an international food courtOur Global Table, during the afternoon of Jan. 20 as community members bring their fare to help raise money for Pisgah Legal Services’ Justice for All Project. The program provides legal help to low-income immigrants and refugees in our community. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $25 or in advance online for $20.

-Asheville City Councilwoman Julie Mayfield says members of City Council are engaged in “an active conversation” about how to recoup some of the expense of collecting taxes. Right now, the city pays the county a 1.5 percent collection fee on the collection of property taxes. The city also pays almost 50 percent of the budget for the county collections staff, Mayfield says.

-Supporters of former Asheville City Councilman Cecil Bothwell plan to gather at 3 p.m. on Jan. 14 at The Block Off Biltmore to celebrate his eight years of service on City Council. Bothwell lost his re-election bid earlier this year. David Lamotte will play some music and the event will double as a fundraiser for Biblioworks and Projecto de las Escuelas Guatemaltecas.

-In case you missed it, Forbes.com included Asheville on its list of “The 15 Coolest Places To Go in 2018.” Asheville, the only U.S. destination on the list, appeared alongside destinations including Cambodia, Bolivia and Southern Tanzania.

-Gary Glancy, a local beer aficionado, will screen a 45-minute craft beer-themed parody of the movie Forrest Gump starting Jan. 10 and 11 at Wedge at Foundation. Glancy and his team, including producer A.D. Weighs and friends and family members, shot the film around the country. Glancy has also created a traveling film festival event called Parodies for Charity, and his Forrest Gump movie will headline that. Here are the screening details:
