Watching the swifts

Share

You can’t see the little birds, but high above the Grove Arcade each night, the chimney swifts are swirling, then diving into a stack atop the Grove Arcade. People love to come out and watch them. “Like black water down an avian drain” is how we described their swirling motions last year, and we like that.

There’s a bigger gathering of swifts at Asheville Middle:

There is also a flock up at the Grove Park Inn. Saw them a couple weeks ago!

They are very cool. But they don’t come close to watching the bats fly out in Austin. We need some bats up here!

I used to watch the Chimney Swifts back in Fillmore. They lived in the chimney at the High School.

Yes, the swifts are here, but not for much longer. Best time to see them is about 7:30 or 8 p.m.

Are they back, Ash? What time is best to see them?
