Word on the street: New craft cocktail bar, Sovereign Remedies, coming to downtown Asheville

UPDATE: New logo sign in the window: Sovereign Remedies

ORIGINAL POST March 3: Word on the street is that there’s a new craft cocktail bar coming together the corner of North Market Street and Walnut. It will be located next door to Ragtime Vintage Clothing, one of Asheville’s awesome downtown thrift stores.

It is the work of Charles Hodge, the talented bar manager at the new Bull and Beggar restaurant in the River Arts District. Most recently, Hodge has been hosting a weekly event called Recession Proof Mixology at Bull and Beggar. RPM is described thusly:

Hosted at the Bull and Beggar Mondays, RPM explores the history and craft of the cocktail while providing high quality at an recession prices.

There’s more about Hodge and his credentials in this Mountain Xpress story by Jonathan Ammons:

Hodge is no stranger to the cocktail game, having helped open the prestigious Clyde Common in Portland, Ore. with cocktail god Jeffrey Morgenthaler. Arriving in Asheville and not finding a developed craft cocktail scene, Hodge set about to develop his own, taking the helm at Chestnut and launching Recession Proof Cocktails in December of 2012.

“Its about taking a night where The Bull and Beggar would normally be closed and nerding out about cocktails in a way that a lot of people can enjoy,” he explained. “It’s about forgotten cocktails, and all the elements of making and crafting a great drink and directly delivering it to people in a way that is comfortable for everyone.”

Asheville’s cocktail scene has been on the upswing over the past few years with the opening of several new cocktail-centric bars. It is slowly but surely creating a reputation akin to the already well-established Beer City USA reputation for delicious craft brew.

Good luck to Hodge!
