Word on the street: Never Blue restaurant in Asheville closed, several other eateries on the verge

I’ve heard that Never Blue restaurant on Broadway has closed. That’s the second restaurant closing in downtown in as many weeks, and word on the street is that two or three other restaurants on the verge of shutting doors for good.

Never Blue is the second location for the well known Hendersonville eatery. But Never Blue never caught on here in Asheville. It was open less than a year. It moved into a location that had some bad mojo – Zoe Rose occupied the space previously, and also didn’t last more than six months. Zoe Rose was the eatery that took the spot of Tingles Cafe in a sudden move that caught everyone offguard.

Ed Boudreax’s barbecue joint is the other downtown restaurant that has closed in the past couple of weeks. As Asheville folks know, the winter months are the slowest of the year for restaurants, and if they don’t have the juice to power through, they ain’t gonna make it. The tourists aren’t in town and snowy weather can make matters worse, although we’ve had one mild winter so far.

What are you hearing?

No, the food at both was NOT okay. It’s not bad manners to point that out. How a hole in the wall like Over Easy can have a line out the door is easy to understand…it’s fresh and delicious. Curate…world class. It’s not excuses like a bad location, bad economy, the winter, etc. It’s poor strategy, poor concept, lackluster menu and bad execution. Maybe these restauranteurs should take notes from the “hippies” at Over Easy, “youngsters” at 12 Bones or “yuppies” at Nona Mia about how it’s done.

From my experience, the food was fine at both places. Mr “OK” needs to learn some manners.

Hmm…that’s too bad. Never Blue in Hendersonville has been a huge hit over the years. Maybe a study should be done contracting the palates and tastebuds of the 2 towns.

Yes but there is already another successful restaurant owner that is opening up a new concept in one of those spaces. It is not the economy it is having crappy food. The people that make good food continue to do well and even expand.

I wonder what the co-owner that was responsible for shutting down Tingles is now thinking? I believe he was the one that was responsible for Zoe Rose, did he have his hand in Never Blue as well?
