Wedge’s Vadim Bora Russian Imperial Stout makes CNN blog’s ‘Best beers of 2012’

The world learns what we knew all along: This beer is amazing.

Here’s what we said about it earlier this month:

A specialty brew from the Wedge, the former Raspberry Russian Imperial Stout was renamed for the late Asheville artist Vadim Bora, who passed away unexpectedly last year. Bora, a native of Russia and reputedly a lover of dark beer, was a Wedge Brewing regular.

Creamy, dark and notoriously delicious, Bora’s namesake is a high-gravity seasonal winter brew available only at the Wedge.

From Eatocracy.CNN.com, the tasty Wedge stout is a CNN pick for the year’s best from Nathan Berrong. Berrong works at CNN’s satellite desk and writes Eatocracy’s beer column, “Berrong on Beer.”

And actually, make that TWO local brewers who made the CNN list: Sierra Nevada’s Narwhal, a Russian Imperial Stout “crafted with 6 different malt varieties” is yet another Berrong pick from WNC.

Also on the list: Westvleteren Trappist 12, a rare beer with a weird 2012 release that irked an owner of Bruisin’ Ales, whose annoyed tweet was picked up by NPR; a Lagunitas IPA; and a 21st Amendment oyster stout.

Three cheers for late Asheville artist Vadim Bora and his namesake stout! And big congrats to the Wedge and to Sierra Nevada of Mills River!

Truly fitting: A great beer to honor a great artist. Asheville was lucky to have Bora. His legacy lives on.
