There was more than just elections to report on Tuesday, so let’s see what other stories WLOSers had to tell us:
One election tidbit
WLOSers, quoting an e-mail and another source, said that the leader of a group for homeschoolers said Tuesday that that it was being used by U.S. Rep. Charles Taylor in the whole debate debacle of last Friday.
If you’ll recall, Taylor said he couldn’t show up in an Ashvegas radio studio to debate challenger Heath Shuler because he had a conflict. Taylor said he had to meet with the homeschoolers group. But the group’s leader said he didn’t get contacted by Taylor until way late and never met with Taylor, or something like that. We didn’t quite understand the whole timeline. Russ Bowen, who told us the story, noted that the homeschooler dude said he voted for Taylor but didn’t want to be used as a pawn.
Polar Bar closing
You know the Polar Bar down on Sweeten Creek Road? Well, WLOSers tell us it’s closing. There’s been a bar there for 20 years, WLOSers said. We’ve never been inside. It always looked a bit sketchy, with the bar surrounded by a tall, white wooden fence. And a big white polar bear outside. WLOSers said the bear is being auctioned off through an ad in IWANA, and the price right now is $600.
Gash pleads guilty
Gail Gash, the 54 year old woman charged with first degree murder in the death and dismemberment of her husband, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Tuesday and will spend 15 to 19 years in prison.
Sheraldo covered the story. He said that prosecutors said they didn’t have any evidence that would show that Gash planned to kill her husband, so they decided to go with the second-degree charge. Sheraldo said court testimony showed that Gail Gash got into an argument with her husband, Don Gash, and hit him with a stick of firewood a couple of times. Investigators found his burned torso in their home, and found other body parts strewn along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Police found Gail Gash hiding under a neighbor’s barn and arrested her.
Sheraldo said some people thought the plea deal was fair, other’s thought she should have gotten more time.
Fatal wreck
There was a fatal wreck in McDowell County on Tuesday. One person was killed on N.C. Highway 226. State troopers shut down the highway for hours. No word on specifics of what happened.
Yancey flu
Yancey County schools, which have been closed all week due to a severe flu outbreak, will remain closed at least until Monday, WLOSers said. On Tuesday, poll workers handed out hand sanitizer.
