–The sequel to Serafina and the Black Cloak, a New York Times bestseller by Asheville author Robert Beatty, has been named: Serafina and the Twisted Staff. Beatty will give a sneak preview of the book during a reading on April 9 at Barnes and Noble in Asheville. More from the FB event listing:
Come on out to Asheville’s big spring Serafina Event for a special sneak-preview reading from Book 2 of the Serafina Series! Robert Beatty–the author of the New York Times bestselling mystery-thriller, “Serafina and the Black Cloak”–will be giving a talk, doing Q&A, meeting fans, and autographing copies of Book 1. But first, a professional Southern storyteller will be reading the first two chapters of Book 2, “Serafina and the Twisted Staff” (July 12 publication). Be among the first to hear it and experience it! All the costumed actors from the book trailer will be in attendance to sign books and talk to people, including the costumes for the new trailer. Free food and drink will be provided, along with lots of Serafina giveaways, and a chance to meet other fans of this exciting new book series.
“Serafina and the Black Cloak” is a spooky mystery-thriller about a brave and unusual 12-year-old girl who lives secretly in the basement of Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC in 1899. All the action of the story takes place in Biltmore House and the Blue Ridge Mountains. A mixture of historical fiction and fantasy-adventure, this book is written for adults and young readers (8 and above). Parents are enjoying it with their children. It’s also being taught in over 300 classrooms nationwide. In addition to being published by Disney Hyperion, it is also being published by Scholastic and translated into many languages around the world.
–Asheville Comic Expo is going on hiatus after a four year run in Asheville. From the A.C.E. page on Facebook:
A.C.E has been a part of our lives for four years and, although we have only gotten bigger and better with each yearly show, the time has come to accept the fact that we can no longer grow A.C.E in the facilities available to us. Despite having such a great location in the heart of downtown, the size of the convention has become severely limited by the surrounding construction and the changing focus of the city.
Asheville is home to a fantastic and diverse nerd community, one that we see every day at Comic Envy. We regret that, for now, we will no longer be able to put on an annual convention that will celebrate that community and the amazing creative talent that only a town like Asheville can produce.
We are looking forward to hosting a great series of events at Comic Envy this year, and promise that the void left by the hiatus of A.C.E. will not go unfilled. Starting with Free Comic Book Day we will be packing 2016 with guest signings, movie premieres and other special events sure to delight and entertain.
We would like to thank our hard-working staff and volunteers for all of the work they have put in over the years. Thank to our special guests, our artists, our vendors and most of all, our attendees.
This is not a goodbye from the Asheville Comic Expo, this is a see you later.
Thank you for everything!
Darrin and the A.C.E crew
-There are no Asheville chefs on the list of James Beard Award finalists this year.

–Actor Jude Law, in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, talks about playing writer Thomas Wolfe in the new movie Genius:
Jude Law: I hadn’t read or heard a lot about Wolfe until I read this script, and in that way I think it was really clever to write a piece about him instead of Max Perkins, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, or others that people have strong opinions of already. Wolfe’s books offered a whole new world to step into, and whilst at times you could accuse him of being somewhat long-winded, he had an incredible quality of prose and a bravery of writing from the heart. He believed in being autobiographical at all times.

“No one paying attention to you, Ted?”
It appears that someone is ^.
Try going back over this thread. Unless that’s too painful. I would venture that some folks are fairly obsessed. So much so that they can hardly remember the topic. Remind me.
“Concentrate. Focus. Now, what’s the topic?”
I see the oh-so-clever progressives need a little more time for that one.
No one paying attention to you, Ted?
“Poor Ted. Er, Tim.”
Concentrate. Focus. Now, what’s the topic?
“Shorter Peckerwood: hijack thread, complain that commenters are fixated on him. What a tedious, pathetic life of unachievement he leads.”
I don’t blame Mr. Blissett and his peanut gallery of progressives for trying to change the subject.
Shorter Peckerwood: hijack thread, complain that commenters are fixated on him. What a tedious, pathetic life of unachievement he leads.
They don’t call him the Ted Cruz of WNC for nuthin’.
Water lawsuit update:
The City of Asheville has reserved 37 seats in the courtroom. Nothing says failure like a manufactured crowd.
Tucson (c before s) — a very common mistake. I’ll be very interesting in the Sonora-style restaurant as I lived in Tucson for 14 years. Hope it matches my tastebud memories.
“Of course you do, Tim. That goes without saying.”
Chris continues having trouble addressing the topic. Or any topic other than me.
Poor Ted. Er, Tim.

“Christ, you’re a nutter.”
It’s interesting that you would comment on me personally instead of on the topic. But I understand your fascination.

Of course you do, Tim. That goes without saying.
Christ, you’re a nutter.
Tim P, that is.
