My buddy Daniel (formerly Northern Buncombe Happenings) reported yesterday that he had confirmed that Banana Republic, Gap and Wilsons Leather would have stores in the shopping center. Here’s a preliminary list of other stores planning to open there, according to property records:

Take it from someone with lots of outlet store experience:
There are no bargains here. They are designed for the uninitiated who THINK they are getting good deals. They aren’t by a long shot. You will find much better deals, with first line merchandise, in any department store with a sale or clearance or both.
Be an aware consumer instead of a good soldier.

But what about Cinebarre? I’m heartened by the fact that they haven’t demolished the store front, but there is still a huge gaping hole where entrance doors once were and no clear indication that a new (or outstanding) business is going in there any time soon.
I’m pretty stoked about these stores. Asheville is on the right track. I’ve never had Godiva Chocolate before. I truly hope it is better than the aweful Ghirardelli. I heard the Godiva Outlet stores have shakes, drinks, and even ice cream there as well as chocolate of course.
or you could go and support a local handmade chocolate shop called the French Broad Chocolate Lounge. They also “have shakes, drinks, and even ice cream there as well as chocolate of course.” and you would actually be supporting the local economy.

The French Broad Chocolate Lounge will not be hurt at all by Godiva. They are far away and attract a different clientele. Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in Biltmore Park will be more hurt by it. I expect the FBCL’s business to only grow in its new location as more downtown hotels come online.
I’ve heard a lot of chatter about low income retail/service jobs and the effect they are going to have on the surrounding area’s housing/traffic/grocery store/access to woods/Parkway/etc for years. Considering the river – Brevard Road (191) will not gain the assault value of other growth venues till a viaduct is built. You have quite a few years to adjust to the changes. I just want to keep my house.

These folks were at the Homecoming Job Fair, although they didn’t actually have any jobs on offer at the time, and said that they would be holding their own job fair at the smaller Ag Center building some time in February or early March. Presumably by that point they’ll have the majority of their stores identified.
Thank goodness we got a sunglass hut. It’s what this town was missing.
I’m thankful they’re going there and not downtown. Asheville Outlets will keep these stores a few miles outside of downtown, at least for awhile.
I’m guessing you’re being sarcastic here but just in case you’re serious you should know there is already a Sunglass Hut in the Asheville Mall.

Everyone now knows that “outlet” clothing is mostly specially made (at lower standards) and never sold in the main stores, right? And those “original prices” are BS:

At least the Dillards clearance center has last season’s leftovers, even if you could get lost in there and never be found.
It sounds like this outlet will be more like the Tanger outlets, where things don’t really seem to cost that much less, and you leave feeling frustrated.
The Learnvest article posted by Luther is excellent. I highly recommend everyone read it before traipsing out to the new outlet mall. Go if you must but buyer beware.
