Fresh Market to open on Hendersonville Road in south Asheville

Share

The Fresh Market is planning to move into the former Harris Teeter/Lowes grocery store space on Hendersonville Road. Harris Teeter had been there before Lowes took over the location. Lowes promptly closed in December 2012. I blogged back in February that The Fresh Market was rumored to move in to this location.

This would be the second Fresh Market location in Asheville. A north location along Merrimon Avenue has been popular for years. I don’t know the history of the 30-year-old grocery store chain, but it started in North Carolina.

This is just the latest in a series of announcements for Asheville in the super-competitive grocery industry. A couple of weeks ago, Publix announced it would build its first Asheville store further south on Hendersonville Road. Trader Joe’s and a new Harris Teeter are both preparing to open next month on Merrimon Avenue. And construction will start soon on a new Whole Foods on Tunnel Road across from the Asheville mall.

It will be interesting to watch south Asheville grow. The entire area around the Mills Gap and Long Shoals intersections Hendersonville Road are going to see massive growth with big new apartment complexes being built, which will spur more retail development.

I like Fresh Market so I’m not opposed, however, as stated above there used to be one right down the street and it closed several years ago. Why re-open now with Publix going in? I truly don’t understand how a city of our size can support all these grocery stores.

The only thing I can figure is that when TFM was in Turtle Creek Shopping Ctr in the 80’s, there weren’t enough people in South Asheville at that time who were interested, or who could afford it. I lived in Arden from 1978-1993, and especially during the earlier years, it was pitiful. We had Bi-Lo, Sky City, Kmart and Burger King. I even remember when they finally built a McDonalds. This is just a guess.

Great news! There used to be a really small Fresh Market where Southeastern Sports Medicine is now at the Turtle Creek Shopping Center. It closed down in the early 2000’s. Glad to see they are coming back on Hendersonville Road!
