The latest rumor on the grapevine is that The Fresh Market is planning to open a store in the Hendersonville Road space previously occupied by Harris Teeter, and then Lowes. The Lowes grocery closed in December.
Earlier this week, a loyal reader wondered if Kroger was eyeing the location.

[…] The Fresh Market is planning to move into the former Harris Teeter/Lowes grocery store space on Hendersonville Road. Harris Teeter had been there before Lowes took over the location. Lowes promptly closed in December 2012. I blogged back in February that The Fresh Market was rumored to move in to this location. […]
very excited about this! living in kenilworth, this coupled with the former greenlife owner opening a new grocery close by, all bases are covered!
The square footage for that site would be way too small for a Kroger, and it seems unlikely that they would move into this market for just one store. On the other hand, there was a Fresh Market in South Asheville years ago and I never understood why they closed. That kind of space would be ideal for them.
The previous location of the Fresh Market in south Asheville was lousy. It was on Turtle Creek Drive off Hendersonville Road, and the store had zero main road visibility.
South Asheville has grown a lot since that store closed, which was in the mid-1990s.
Man, that’s fantastic!! I live in Morganton but that location would be a lot easier to get to instead of battling Merrimon (especially after Trader Joe’s opens).
