Last night, I got the first taste of Asheville’s most awaited annual brew, Highland’s Cold Mountain Winter Ale.

It won’t be available for a few more weeks, but as usual, my friends out at Highland Brewing let me preview the beer. It’s delicious and is every big as tasty at Cold Mountain has been through the years. Highland has done it again with a magical mix of various spices.

Highland can never make enough of this stuff to go around. The beer always sells out each year.
They’ll have the first kegs of Cold Mountain draft out in early November. Then, they’ll release bottled product (fancy one liter containers, 22 ouncers, and finally the 12-ounce bottles in a 12-pack box).

Meanwhile, the first beers are rolling off Highland’s new small pilot brewing system.
Little Hump #1 is a version of the brew once called Black Mountain Bitter. It’s smooth, golden and creamy. The recipe and taste will change a bit before Little Hump becomes a regular seasonal.

I was fortunate enough to get a preview pint of Cold Mountain last night as well during our gig at Highland and must say it's as good or better than it's been in previous years. There are a few more finishing flavor notes that really pop through that I remembered as being more subtle in last year's recipe. It is great from the first sip to the last. Can't wait to bring some home! Oh yeah, if you haven't been to the new tasting room yet, you must go. We now have a tasting room/music venue on par with Pisgah Brewing on this side of town… a very GOOD thing for Asheville brew and music lovers!
