More of what’s going around:

-Asheville-based Soomo Publishing creates online assignments for classrooms around the country. Five years ago, the company created an educational parody video, and now they’re fighting to keep the YouTube video ad-free. From Soomo:

Sony/ATV is requiring Soomo to take down our educational parody video Bad Romance: Women’s Suffrage unless Sony can monetize it with an advertisement. As part of their copyright claims process, YouTube recently allowed Sony to place an ad on our video, and in an effort to defend the video and remove the ad, we’ve repeatedly appealed this claim on the basis of fair use provisions for parody works.

The parody video, with over 3 million views and an Emmy win in 2012 for Best Instructional Content, receives fan mail weekly and has inspired thousands of students to learn about how women got the vote. Since its release in 2012, Soomo has made the video available on YouTube for free, without ads, in hopes that teachers across America could engage students with the story of the women’s suffrage movement and the passage of the 19th amendment. Help amplify our voice so that Sony/ATV sees the value in preserving this educational resource.

If you think this video should remain in place and ad-free, tweet @SonyATVMusicPub and let them know why you think they should #SaveBadRomance.

-Ingles (and its Milkco Inc.) is donating 6,000 gallons of fresh, in-date gallon milk to MANNA, according to a press release. More: “These donations will come in batches that the food bank can ensure will remain fresh, from donation to distribution. This is the largest milk donation in MANNA FoodBank’s history. -Blue Ridge Parkway officials have announced tunnel repair work occurring this winter to the north and south of the Asheville corridor, according to a press release. More:

Both closures will be in effect from December 1, 2015 through spring of 2016. Repairs to Tanbark Tunnel at Milepost 374.4 will require a closure from Milepost 364.1 at Craggy Dome Parking Overlook to Milepost 375.6 at Ox Creek Road. Repairs to the Buck Springs Tunnel at Milepost 407.3 will require a closure from Milepost 405.5 at NC Route 151 to Milepost 408.8 near Mt. Pisgah. Both lanes of the motor road in these sections will be closed to all visitor traffic, including bicyclists and pedestrians.

The two projects will accomplish repairs to deteriorating concrete tunnel liners, drainage systems, stone tunnel portals and the road surface. The Blue Ridge Parkway is recognized internationally as an example of landscape design achievement and Parkway tunnels are a significant design feature along the historic route. Tunnels along the Parkway were often constructed to reduce excessive scarring that open cuts would entail, enabling the Parkway to cross through ridges in the interest of maintaining the most desirable route location. Over time Parkway tunnels have become a signature design feature and part of the Parkway’s cultural history.

Every carton of milk contains a hidden ingredient, and that’s a lifetime of deprivation and suffering for mother cows and the calves who are stolen from them. If you care about animals, drink healthy, humane plant-based milks (soy, almond, hemp, rice,etc.).

The inclement weather closures on the parkway make for awesome open areas for biking with kids, long-boarding and other stuff on the roadway surface.

Hopefully, not all of the stretches on the northern side will be closed….just those immediately surrounding the work on the tunnels.
