-Activist Bree Newsome, best known for taking a Confederate flag down from a flagpole on the grounds of the South Carolina statehouse in 2015, will be in Asheville on Sept. 30 for the unveiling of her portrait at the YMI Cultural Center. The artist, Robert Shetterly, will be on hand for the 4:30 p.m. reception.

-Hemmingway’s Cuba, one of two new restaurants planned for the new Cambria Suites hotel in downtown Asheville, is holding a job fair from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Wednesday (today). The location is the basement level of Isa’s Bistro inside the Haywood Park Hotel downtown.

-Asheville artist Kenn Kotara will hold an opening reception at 6 p.m. on Oct. 7 at London District Studio for his new installation, Believe me. The work is punched Braille on gold foil paper mounted on paper with felt cloth. The gold panels contain thousands of derogatory and insensitive words spoken and texted by President Donald Trump. The work signifies language, value and principles, according to a press release. “Punched in Braille and codified to intentionally obstruct information, we are confronted with the psychological impairment prevalent in today’s society.”

Brewgrass is Saturday.

The Asheville Outdoor Show is Sunday.

The final Downtown After 5 of the year is Friday on North Lexington Ave. Billy Strings and Whiskey Shivers are the featured musical acts.

-The Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride will be held in Asheville on Sept. 24. There’s a motorcycle show and after-party at the Salvage Station following the ride.

The 12 Bones and Wedge Brewing Neighborhood Pig Pickin’ goes from 5-9 p.m. on Sept. 23 at Wedge Foundation.

-Early voting in the Asheville City Council 2017 elections starts next week.
