This is a great event. Press release:

4th Annual Beer City Cup attracts 900 local, regional, national, and even international players!

The Beer City Cup is the Southeast’s Premier Adult Soccer Tournament with teams from NC, SC, TN, VA, GA, KY, VA, and FL! Held every Labor Day weekend, the Beer City Cup is a one-of-a-kind tournament in the adult soccer community; and the first in the southeast region to offer cash prizes ($5,500) and serve beer!

The tournament kicks-off Friday, August 30th with a “Check-in Social,” from 6:00-10:00pm at Asheville Brewing Company, downtown on Coxe Avenue. Games start (rain or shine) Saturday, August 31st at 9:00am at the John B. Lewis Soccer Complex in east Asheville. There will be a social on Saturday night at Highland Brewing Company beginning at 6:00pm. The Semi Finals and Finals will take place on Sunday, September 1st at Memorial Stadium behind McCormick Field beginning at 11:30am. Beer sales will start at Noon — $2.00 for 16oz pours or $3 for 22oz pours in a Beer City Cup mug. The tournament concludes with fireworks at 9:45pm on Sunday.

Started in 2010, the Asheville-Buncombe Adult Soccer Association’s (ABASA) all-volunteer board decided to transform the now defunct Blue Ridge Cup into the Beer City Cup after Asheville’s 2nd crown as “Beer City, USA.” Spear-headed by ABASA board members Eric Usher and David Turner, the tournament would now feature both Asheville’s thriving adult soccer scene and the city’s most excellent breweries. “With soccer and beer’s 100+ history together, the tournament is the perfect combination, we know this because we’re completely sold out with 62 registered teams,” says Usher. The Beer City Cup has partnered with the Western North Carolina Soccer Foundation each year and will again in 2013.

This year organizers welcome another partner; the Autism Society of NC. “Autism touches many in the soccer community so we have decided to donate 10% of beer sales and tips to ASNC. These games are really exciting; there are lots of goals, saves, and shots, so we hope to pull in a lot of spectators to support the game, the Foundation, and ASNC,” says Turner.

Participating breweries: Highland, Green Man, Pisgah, Oskar Blues, Hi-Wire, and Asheville Brewing Company. And, for the hungry folks, Lowdown FoodTruck and Rolling Stone Pizza will be on-site.
