Asheville Beer Guy: PR snafu catches Flying Dog Brewery in the crosshairs as it jokingly knocks Beery City


Asheville Beer Guy Tony Kiss reports:

The Asheville beer scene has found itself in the middle of a Facebook PR mess not of its own making.

It started when Flying Dog Brewery of Maryland posted something on its Facebook page about its new IPA called The Truth and noted that it “was not brewed at our Asheville brewery…because we don’t have one.” Apparently, it was a humorous poke at the Asheville area which has landed breweries from both Sierra Nevada and New Belgium.

Going another step, it included a map of N.C. with a big X through the state.

That set off a lot of wave of complaints and comments and the posting was quickly removed from the Flying Dog page.

In its place was a posting noting that the brewery had managed to offend “North Carolina beer, breweries already in, moving to, or expanding to North Carolina, the entire state of North Carolina
and probably people who live in South Carolina, but work in North Carolina.”

This isn’t the first time that the fast-growing Asheville brew world has received a humorous poke from an outside brewery. Last year, 21st Amendment of San Francisco made an online posting about moving to Asheville – as a joke.

Did the backlash actually come as ‘a lot of a wave’ of responses?

Do professionals in the media industry proof-read their own work anymore?

Thank you! Every single post by the “Beer Guy” is riddled with misspellings and grammatical errors. And, they’re originally posted on the Citizen-Times website, a serious news entity that seemingly employs no editing staff. It makes the “Beer Guy’s” articles unreadable in some cases and a joke in others, which is sad for the breweries he’s reporting on.. Cheers to you for calling it out, Roscoe. Someone should buy you a beer.

According to PT Barnum, There’s no such thing as bad publicity. The more they’re talkin’ about Asheville or NC, the more people are hearing about them and that’s not a bad thing.
