Michelle Pace Wood has declared her candidacy for the N.C. Senate District 49 seat left open by the recent death of Sen. Martin Nesbitt. She joins three other candidates running for the seat: Terry Van Duyn, Veronika Gunter and Charlie Owen.

Here’s the press release:

Buncombe County small business owner Michelle Pace Wood has announced her candidacy for the N.C. Senate District 49. Michelle is proud of the personal and professional relationships that have allowed her to acquire a deep understanding of what it takes to persevere through good times and bad. Her work experience includes working on a family farm, real estate, property management, and owning and operating a local small business. Michelle’s diverse background gives her the ability to recognize and address the needs of many different working people and industries here in Buncombe County.

Wood is honored to currently serve on the Buncombe County Planning Board, on the Enka Schools Foundation Board, and as a member of the Enka/ Candler Business Association. She is also proud to have served the Buncombe County Democratic Party as former 1st Vice Chair and to have received the Buncombe County Democratic Woman of the Year award in 2010.

“I’ve been standing up for my community with a Democratic voice for years, and I’m ready to work hard for Buncombe County and the State. When a community in need reaches out for help supporting public education, farmers, environment, and small business, I get in there and help to solve the problem.” Wood said.

Wood knows that our teachers and public schools deserve to be treated with respect. She understands Raleigh can’t keep passing the burden on to our cities and counties. Michelle wants to see our public schools, families, and small businesses thrive and is ready to work hard to make sure they are treated with the fairness they deserve.

“I’m very concerned about the legislation coming out of Raleigh attacking our public schools, voting rights, working families, and the environment,” said Wood. “I’m ready to bring my 6 years of policy experience on the Planning Board as well as my knowledge of upcoming legislation to help my fellow Democrats in the Senate during this challenging and critical short session.”
