Traditionally dominated by men, landscape design shapes our lives, transforms cities, and nourishes the environment. As more women choose this profession, does their work reveal their gender?
Film director and graduate landscape architect Carolann Stoney has produced an award-winning film on the subject. Hosted by the Asheville Design Center, Women in the Dirt will hold its national premiere in Asheville at the Fine Arts Theatre on June 15 at 7:00. A $10 donation is suggested to benefit the programs of the Asheville Design Center.
Women in the Dirt takes the viewers behind-the-scenes to see how seven groundbreaking landscape architects create meaningful, profound spaces whether in vast public projects or in private homes. Their projects mingle awareness of architectural and landscape principles, concern with sustainability and safety, and sensitivity to beauty and functionality.
Through conversations with the architects in their offices or the gardens they’ve designed, the film explores each woman’s personal aesthetics and approach to her discipline. “Women in the Dirt shows how these ‘masters of the obvious’ create the sublime,” said Asheville Design Center Executive Director Chris Joyell,

The Asheville Design Center engages Western North Carolina in creative design that promotes thriving, equitable and healthy communities. To date, professional design volunteers have donated 10,622 hours valued at $943,860 to projects of public concern around the region.
