Corner Kitchen kicked
In this post, a writer at Chowhound says they had a rather horrible meal at the Corner Kitchen in Biltmore.

Fried calamari with a heavy, and partially uncooked batter. It went like this…crunchy exterior…layer of uncooked batter…calamari. This was only true for the bigger pieces of tentacle, btw.

Unremarkable shrimp wrapped in almost raw bacon on a skewer, seved with completely flavorless hoppin john. Very disappointing.

Scallop ceviche…we couldn’t even finish this. …

entree – The deviled crab cakes were not bad. Very heavy (mayo again), but not bad, and the sweet potato and green pepper salad they came with was the highlight of the meal.

Missing NC
Mandi at Mandikaye.com tells us what she misses the Tar Heel state:

Have I mentioned lately how much I miss North Carolina? Do you see this beautiful picture? The trees! I miss the trees! Often, I’ll say that to my friends, and one of them will inevitably point to a tree and exclaim, “Look! There’s a tree!”

UNCA vs. UNC
Lots of folks are excited about the UNCA/UNC basketball game on Wednesday night.

Ready for some jazz?

allaboutjazz.com has a blurb about the Grove Park Inn’s upcoming All that Jazz concert:

The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa is pleased to announce The Manhattan Transfer and the historic reunion of Joe Sample & The Crusaders will headline the resort’s 16th annual “All That Jazz” Weekend in Asheville, NC, January 25-27, 2008.

Jazz guitar virtuosos Bucky Pizzarelli and John Pizzarelli will open for The Transfer on Friday evening and The John Pizzarelli Quartet will open for Sample & The Crusaders on Saturday evening with their fabulous renditions from the American Popular Songbook.

Other entertainers include guitarist Vince Lewis, trombonist Rick Simerly, saxophonists Todd Wright and Phil Thomson, vocalist Maddy Winer and many other regional jazz players.

Somebody’s exploring America by horseback, by nobody in Asheville cared

At Uncovering America by Horseback, we see that horse and rider came through Ashvegas this past weekend, but we didn’t see any coverage of it. Here’s a blurb from the site, referring to the weekend visit:

Tomorrow Bill plans on ridding through Asheville. We have coordinated with the Asheville Police Department and they planned out a safe route for Bill and Blackie. He will be on Riverside Dr. and make his way to Lyman St. He will then follow Lyman to Amboy Rd. From Amboy he’ll take State St. to Haywood Rd. and then onto Brevard Rd. We will make a stop in The Biltmore Square Mall parking lot some time between 12:00pm and 2:00 pm.

I saw the horse guy! I was driving up Brevard Rd around noon and I went past them. There was a guy in front of him with a camera, so I thought it was some kind of local indie movie thing. He was wearing a long trenchcoat and a wide-brimmed hat.
