Weekend Update: Things to do in Asheville starting Nov. 17

We’re thrilled about everything happening in this Weekend Update, especially the Asheville Holiday Parade, which will take the streets of downtown Asheville by storm! What sort of things are on your radar the weekend before the upcoming holiday? As always, let us know what we missed!

Thursday 11/17

Last Men Standing screening @ Fine Arts Theatre
“Last Men Standing,” a feature-length documentary following the lives and experiences of eight long-term AIDS survivors, will be screened at the Fine Arts Theatre at 7:30 p.m. The film was directed and produced by San Francisco Chronicle filmmakers Erin Brethauer, a former photographer at the Asheville Citizen-Times, and Tim Hussin. The screening will benefit The Western North Carolina AIDS Project (WNCAP).
 

Gospel Night @ the Double Crown

10 pm – 2 am

It’s back! The popular Gospel Night series returns to West Asheville with the Highway QCs. $10 gets you all the gospel your heart desires.

Friday 11/18

How I Learned to Drive @ 35 Below

7:30 pm

Catch the final performance of this Pulitzer-winning play, produced by the Attic Salt Theatre Company. Our Asheville Grit reviewer loved this disturbing, deeply moving play!

Saturday 11/19

Asheville Holiday Parade @ Downtown Asheville

11 am

The Asheville Holiday Parade rolls through downtown Asheville on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m., bringing with it the floats, marching bands and Santa, of course. The parade route travels Biltmore Avenue and Patton Avenue.

Starts at 10 am
Get your Christmas shopping started early by heading out to Marshall High Studios on Blannahassett Island starting at 10 a.m. This year marks the eighth year for the juried art show featuring the work of resident and area artists, designers and craftspeople.

2016 Brown Bag Songwriting Competition Finals @ Asheville Music Hall

7 – 11 pm

Promoting local songwriters, Asheville’s “premier songwriting competition” has reached its final round of the year. Come see the 10 finalists of the year compete to win it all.

Improv by The Deep End and The No-See-Ums @ NYS3
8 pm
Some of Asheville’s most talented improvisors come together for an fun-filled evening of improv at the studios of NYS3 in Woodfin. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Sunday 11/20

Holy Wave, Nest Egg, White Wooly @ Lazy Diamond

11:30 pm

A trifecta of live music from three fantastic acts at downtown’s favorite Dive Bar.
