My beer-drinking buddy from South Kackalacki has the news in a good round-up of Asheville beer news. I missed the tasting last night at Bruisin’ Ales, but have every intention of picking up some Pisgah soon.
Also note the news about the “Obamagang” beer coming to town.
Read on:
***Bruisin Ales, recently voted the number-three beer retailer in the world by a popular Web site, is having a rare Tuesday tasting today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the store at 66 Broadway Street downtown. The brewery … Pisgah, from nearby Black Mountain, NC. These guys make some incredible, adventuresome beers. A couple of weeks ago I was raving about the Pisgah Valdez, an intense coffee stout made with organic fair-trade coffee beans, and that beer will be sampled along with a pale ale, brown ale, Belgian Tripel and Russian imperial stout. The tasting, which is free, coincides with the launching of Pisgah’s new 22-ounce bottles, which will be available at Bruisin. Check it out.
***Remember a few weeks back I blogged about a beer brewed by Ommegang called “Obamagang,” in honor of the presidential inauguration? Well, contrary to initial reports that it would be available only in select bars up north, The Thirsty Monk, a Begian-beer-themed bar in downtown Asheville, says that around the end of the month it will be getting some of this porter-stout hybrid with a touch of Belgian kriek (cherry lambic).
***For those of you Upstaters who may be up in Asheville this weekend, The Wedge Brewery in the River Arts District is now open on Sundays beginning at 2:00. With football season sadly over now, that gives us something to look forward to on Sundays. The Wedge has a really eclectic lineup of beers on tap, from pilsner to stout to seemingly everything in between.
