Warren Haynes’ top 10 albums

The Anderson Independent-Mail has the story:

For more than a decade guitarist Warren Haynes has been playing fiery blues in his southern-rock power trio, Gov’t Mule. His annual Christmas Jam — staged in Asheville, N.C., for the past 20 years — remains one of that city’s most popular events. Haynes’ all-time favorite albums, presented below with comments, indicate a strong preference for the music of the ’60s and ’70s.

1) James Brown: “Star Time”

“This 4-CD set looks at James’ career historically. It’s an awesome collection, from the founder of funk.”

2) Bob Dylan: “Highway 61 Revisited”

“Every song on the album is a masterpiece. It’s hard to choose a favorite Dylan record, but this is definitely one of the best.”

3) Otis Redding: “The Otis Redding Story”

“This is three CD’s of historic Otis. He’s my all-time favorite singer.”

4) Van Morrison: “Astral Weeks”

“This album was recorded in less than two days. It shows Van’s prowess as both a vocal improviser and a songwriter.”

5) Allman Brothers: “Live at Fillmore East”

“This album is a guitar player’s dream, and it captures the original band at its peak. It’s a record I grew up listening to.”

6) Sly and the Family Stone: “Stand!”

“This album was the bridge between soul music (my first love) and rock music. It’s another album I had when I was kid — when I only owned a few — and it’s embedded in my brain.”

7) Jimi Hendrix Experience: “Axis – Bold As Love”

“This is my favorite Hendrix album. It shows not only his different guitar styles, but also what a great writer he was.”

8) Jeff Beck: “Blow By Blow”

“Another guitarist’s dream record. You could study this album forever.”

9) Willie Dixon: “Chess Box”

“This set features a lot of my favorite blues artists — like Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Otis Rush — doing Willie Dixon songs. Awesome!”

10) Little Feat: “Waiting For Columbus”

“This is one of the greatest live albums of all time. As with the Allman Brothers Band, it captures the spirit of a great live band better than any studio recording.”

Can any thing BAD be said about any of these?? NO People tend to look back when looking for best of this or that. Remember that great pizza a few years back? With music it’s also the early stuff that turned you on. Music after that just tends to continue that orginal feelings.Hell I’ve burnt out how many vinyl Live/Daad and bought the CD version and the box set from the dates around it was recorded. The high never ends.

Are any of those more recent than 15 years? 20 years? 25 years?

Strong preference? How about a complete write-off of anything even remotely recent.

I don’t mind Haynes giving the nod to the music he grew up with, but am I supposed to believe that nothing great has come out since Jimi Hendrix?
