Two deadly Buncombe shootings

Deputies kill two overnight
Susan Mundy was outside the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Department this morning to tell us that two deputies shot and killed two men overnight. She quoted Sheriff Bobby Medford as saying that this sort of thing is a rarity, and that his officers are rarely involved in shootings.

The cases are unrelated. The first happened about 8:50 a.m., Mundy told us, in Leicester off Dix Creek Road. A teen there was threatening suicide and had a shotgun. A deputy shot and killed the teen, Terry Evans, at his mother’s home on Poor Man’s Hollow.

A little later over in Weaverville, deputies were trying to serve a warrant on Dula Springs Road. They found Gregory Hensley, who had a handgun at some point, and they shot and killed him, Mundy said.

In both cases, officers felt their lives were threatened, the sheriff told Mundy. The officers have been put on administrative leave pending investigations.
