Learning is dynamic at the fifth annual Organic Growers School’s True Nature Country Fair, held this year at a new venue, Highland Lake Cove, in Flat Rock, Saturday, Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.The event teaches fair-goers about sustainability and local food production. Workshops provide hands-on learning about variety of topics, many focusing on the traditions of Southern Appalachia. Classes and demonstrations include apple cider pressing, artisan bread baking, winter gardening, splitting bamboo for basket weaving, water bath canning, traditional archery, beekeeping, plant rescues, blacksmithing, composting with red worms, herb gardening, permaculture and much more.Other features include animal exhibits, including working dogs and sheep, low-impact horse logging, and goat-cart rides. The diverse musical lineup includes Native American flute music to Americana and a singer/songwriter. A children’s area will feature a variety of arts and craft projects.Tickets are $10 for adults and $3 for children ages 3-12, available at the gate, online and at local outlets. Most classes are included in the price.No pets are allowed. Fair-goers are encouraged to bring reusable drink cups and utensils to minimize waste.
